Outdoor vs Garage EV Charger Installation in San Diego: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Plenty of San Diego homes don't have a garage that fits a car. Some park in the driveway, some under a carport, and some use the garage for storage, a gym, or a home office. So one of the first questions we hear is simple: can my EV charger go outside, or does it have to be in the garage?

The short answer is that a Level 2 charger can go in either spot, as long as the equipment is rated for it and the install is done to code. The better question is which spot makes the most sense for how you actually park and charge. Here's how to think it through.

Can an EV Charger Be Installed Outside?

Yes, if the charger is rated for outdoor use. Many hardwired Level 2 chargers are built for it. The Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector, for example, is listed for indoor and outdoor installation with a Type 3R / IP54 enclosure rating and an operating range of -22°F to 122°F (Tesla Wall Connector product specifications). A Type 3R enclosure is designed to handle rain, which is a lot more than San Diego usually throws at it.

What matters is checking the rating of the exact charger you plan to buy, and installing it the way the manufacturer specifies.

Garage Installation: Pros and Cons

Why a garage is often the easiest choice

  • Shorter wire runs. In many San Diego homes the main panel or a subpanel is on a garage wall, so the circuit can be short and simple.
  • Protected from sun and weather. The charger and cable stay out of direct sun and out of the way.
  • Tidy cable storage. The cable hangs on the unit, out of reach of foot traffic and kids.

When the garage isn't the right fit

  • You don't actually park in it.
  • The garage is converted or used as living or storage space.
  • You have two cars and only one fits inside, and the second car parks in the driveway. (If you're charging two cars, see our guide to charging two EVs at home.)

A charger in a garage you never park in isn't much use. Put it where the car actually sits overnight.

Outdoor Installation: Pros and Cons

Why homeowners choose an outdoor charger

  • Driveway and carport parking. It's the practical answer for homes where the car lives outside.
  • Reach for more than one parking spot. A well-placed charger on an exterior wall or a post can sometimes reach the driveway and the street-side spot. The Tesla Wall Connector comes with a 24-foot cable (Tesla specifications), which gives some flexibility, but we'll measure your actual parking spots before picking a location.
  • Keeps the garage free for whatever you use it for now.

What outdoor installs need

Outdoor work is a little more involved than a garage install. A few things we plan for:

  • Weather-rated fittings and conduit. Tesla's installation manual calls for watertight fittings where wires enter the Wall Connector's wirebox on outdoor installs (Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector installation manual).
  • Mounting height. Tesla lists a minimum outdoor mounting height of 24 inches and a maximum of 60 inches, with about 45 inches recommended (Tesla installation manual).
  • Sun and heat. Tesla notes the Wall Connector may reduce charging current in rare cases at ambient temperatures around 95°F to protect itself, and recommends locations that stay below 122°F (Tesla installation manual). For inland neighborhoods that get hot afternoons, a shaded wall or a north- or east-facing spot is a smart choice. Most charging happens overnight anyway, when it's cooler.
  • Longer runs. If the parking spot is on the far side of the house from the panel, the wire run gets longer. That's often the biggest factor in the scope of an outdoor job, and it's something we look at closely on a site visit.

Outdoor Outlet vs Hardwired Charger

Some homeowners ask for an outdoor NEMA 14-50 outlet so they can plug in a mobile charger. That can work, but there are extra rules:

  • GFCI protection. The electrical code requires ground-fault (GFCI) protection on any receptacle installed for EV charging, wherever it is (NEC 625.54 explained by Leviton).
  • A weatherproof cover. Outdoor receptacles need an enclosure rated for the location, and in a wet location the cover has to stay weatherproof even with the plug inserted (NEC 406.9 explained by Leviton).

For most outdoor setups, a hardwired charger is the cleaner option: no exposed outlet, no plug to wear out, and often more charging power. Tesla's Wall Connector is designed to be hardwired, not plugged in (Tesla installation manual). For the full comparison, read our post on NEMA 14-50 vs a hardwired EV charger.

How to Decide: A Quick Checklist

  • Where does the car park overnight? Start there.
  • Where is your electrical panel? The distance between the panel and the parking spot shapes the job.
  • How many cars are you charging, now or soon? Placing one charger so it can reach two spots, or planning for power sharing, saves work later.
  • Does the spot get hard afternoon sun? Pick shade when you can.
  • Does your panel have room? Location doesn't change how much power the charger needs. If your panel is tight, see whether you need a panel upgrade for a Tesla Wall Connector.

Permits Apply Indoors and Out

Whether the charger goes in the garage or on an outside wall, installing a new circuit for a Level 2 charger is electrical work that needs a permit and inspection. Our guide to EV charger permits in San Diego walks through how that works in the City and County.

FAQ

Can a Tesla Wall Connector be installed outside? Yes. The Gen 3 Wall Connector is rated for indoor and outdoor installation, with a Type 3R / IP54 enclosure.

Is it safe to charge an EV in the rain? Chargers and vehicles rated for outdoor use are designed for it. The key is using outdoor-rated equipment installed to code with weatherproof fittings.

Is an outdoor EV charger install more involved than a garage install? Often a little, because of weather-rated materials and, in many homes, a longer run from the panel. Every home is different, so we confirm the scope on a site visit.

Can I put a NEMA 14-50 outlet outside? Yes, with GFCI protection and a weatherproof cover rated for the location. For most outdoor setups, we recommend a hardwired charger instead.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor EV charger? Yes. A new charger circuit needs an electrical permit and inspection, indoors or out.
